Traditionally the gounders of Koorai Kootam belong to Araya naadu (அரைய நாடு), one of the 24 Counties (administrative regions with devolved powers) of the kongu Nadu (கொங்கு தேசம்) or Tamilakkam. Sivagiri Thalaiyanallur Arulmigu Ponkaaliamman diety is the kuladeivam for koorai kootam and Sivagiri Atheenam Srilasri Siva Samaya Pandita Guruswamigal is the kulaguru for this Kulam. Every year in the month of March – April (பங்குனி மாதம்) the annual celebration for Sri Pongaliamman is held. The highlight of this celebration is the tens of thousands of people lining both sides of the procession route of the deity through the streets of the Thalaiyanallur village with torches (தீபந்தம்).
Although Thalaiyanallur was the native of Koorai Kulam, nowadays the people of this kulam are spread mainly across Erode, Nasiyanur, Perundurai, Salem, Thiruchengode, Namakkal and Rasipuram. There is also a tradition that the right for lighting the first lamp for Lord Chennimalai Murugan belongs to Koorai Kulam community. Due to the misunderstandings within the Koorai Kulam community living in Thalaiyanallur few separated and setup a temple for Sri Ponkaliamman near Nasiyanaur in a village called Olaipalayam.
