Pollachi N Mahalingam, (aka Dr N Mahalingam Gounder or Arutchelvar) is the Chairman of Sakthi Group, 6,000 crore rupees industrial conglomerate operating in sugar, automobiles, finance, distilleries, power and logistics. Mahalingam is a philanthropist, educationalist and politician. He has established a number of educational institutions and known for his support to various spiritual and cultural organisations.

Mahalingam was born in an agriculture family on 21 March 1923 at Pollachi.  He was born to P Nachimuthu Gounder, who started the Sakthi Group in 1921 by diversifying his traditional business of hiring out bullock carts to starting a passenger transport services. Nachimuthu Gounder’s only son Mahalingam joined the business in 1943 and helped grew the business to its current level.

He served as a Member of Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu during 1952 to 1967 and was on the Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission for two terms.

He received the Padma Bhushan award from the Government of India in 2007 for his contributions to the nation in the field of Trade and Industry. His other honors include Honorary Consul from the Government of Mauritius during 1989 to 1992 and a number of other recognition and awards.

Mahalingam is known for his association and support to H H Sri Swami Satchidanananda, Vethanthri Maharishi and Vallalar Ramalinga Swamigal. He is the president of Temple of Consciousness at Aliyar, Pollachi established by Vethanthri Maharishi.

Mahalingam is supported by his sons M Manickam, M Balasubramaniam and M Srinvisan; son-in-law B.K.Krishnaraj Vanavarayar; brother-in-law A Alagappan; and other professionals in the management of Sakthi Group.

Mr. Manickam, served as the President of the South Indian Sugar Mills Association for a number of years and was also the President of the Indian Sugar Mills Association, New Delhi and President of the Sugar Technologists’ of India.


SKM Maeilanandhan (earlier S K Mayilsamy Gounder) is the Founder Chairman of the SKM Group, Erode, engaged in poultry and poultry feed products. Maeilanandhan comes from an agricultural family and started his general store in 1966. He subsequently expanded into fertilizer distribution, poultry farming and animal feed distribution. Today, SKM Group is engaged in the manufacture of poultry and animal feeds, contract farming of eggs, farm services and marketing, with annual turnover in excess of 400 crore rupees.

Around his 60th birthday, Maeilanandhan handed over the management of his companies to his two sons and dedicated his time to Yoga and other social services. In 1982 he became a followed of the Vethanthri Maharishi and since 1997 is the President of The World Community Service Centre, founded by Vethanthri Maharishi. He also holds a number of other positions in industrial, social and cultural organisations.

SKM Maeilanandhan was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2013 for his contributions in the field of Social Work.


Dr S V Balasubramaniam is the Chairman of Bannari Amman Group, founded by his father S Vedanayagam Gounder.  Bannari Amman Group is engaged in manufacturing, trading, distribution, financing and education activities. Bannari Amman sugars, Bannari Amman Spinning Mills Limited and Bannari Institute of Technology as some of the entities in the group. Balasubramaniam joined the group in 1980s and since then expanded the group to its current position, with annual turnover in excess of 3,000 crore rupees.

Balasubramaniam is a qualified Chartered Accountant (CA) and Company Secretary (CS).  He holds executive positions on a number of organisations including Indian Sugar Mills Association; and Siruthuli, a citizens’ movement to promote and preserve ecological conservation.

  2. I am biggest fan of sir Dr S.V.Balasubramaniam and he is one of my role models of being an industrialist.And have no words to treat his achievements and his empire as a kongu vellalar.
