Kongu Vellalar Gounders are predominantly an agricultural community residing in Kongu Nadu, a region in the western part of Tamil Nadu. The community is also engaged in trade and business activities mainly in Kongu Nadu, though many have expanded or moved far beyond the boundaries of Kongu Nadu. Kongu Vellalar Gounders hold prominent positions, globally, in different spheres of life.

Kongu Vellalar Gounders are often referred to as Kongu Vellala Gounders or Vellala Gounders or simply Gounders. Kongu Vellala Gounders follow Saiva Siddantha traditions of Hinduism. However, not every Kongu Vellala Gounder today restrict themself to the Saiva Siddantha traditions.

The Kongu Vellala Gounder community is divided into more than 200 kulams or kootams. Various literature refer to a different number of kulams or kootams. Each kulam has its own Kula Deivam and Kula Guru. The tradition of Kula Deivam is widely practiced.

Today, Gounders are actively engaged in the political landscape of Tamil Nadu, with many Gounders holding ministerial positions. Gounders are also represented by a number of regional and international associations as well as political parties.

Kongu Vellalar Gounder Community website is attempting to bring together in one place the Gounder community’s history; demographics; social structure; and traditions, customs and rituals. It also strives to identify, honor and immortalize prominent Gounders who have contributed not only to the development and welfare of the community, but also to the country and humanity.

Origin of the name Kongu Vellala Gounder

There are many different interpretations for the origin of Kongu Vellalar Gounder.

Vellalars (aka vellala, velala, velalar) refers to an elite class of agriculturist landlords in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Sri Lanka. It is widely believed that Vellalars originated from Velirs (i.e., local chieftains or Kurunila Mannargal). Further details on Velirs are in the ancient history section (under development). Vellalars are divided into a number of sub-castes including Gounders, Mudaliars and Pillai.

Who are Kongu Vellalar Gounders

Understanding the meaning and origin of Kongu Vellalar Gounders

Kongu refers to people who were originally from the Kongu Nadu region. The common view is that people of Kongu Nadu are Kongu Vellala Gounders (Mudaliars are Thondai Nadu, Pillais are Chola Nadu, etc).

There are divergent views on the origin of the word Kongu. It is believed to have come from Kongadesam, where Konga is a variation of Ganga or the land of Gangas.

Reference to the word Gangakulam in Kongu Mangala Vazthu is believed to represent Kongu Vellala Gounders. Gangakulam is interpreted to means descendants of King Gangadatta (in Sanskrit “the one”, given by the Goddess Ganga).

Kongu also means nectar of flowers.

Gounder is widely believed to mean Kongu Vellala Gounders. However, some argue that Gounder is a title (like Mudaliar and Pillai) rather than name of a community or caste. For this reason Gounder is used or claimed by many communities including Vettuvars, Vanniars, etc.

The common view is that the word Gounder originated from Kaamindan (noble protector of land and its people). Kaamindan later transformed into Kavundan or Goundan or Gounder.

Notwithstanding the lack of clarity, today, Kongu Vellala Gounders are a large, flourishing community with a well developed social structure and established traditions and customs. They are distinct to other Vellalars as well as to other communities using the title or claiming the surname Gounder.

Historical research is constrained by lack of documented or reliable information. There are also differing interpretations, claims and counter-claims. RootsToBuds aims to not only continue and support the historical research, but also to try and understand the history based on information available today. Collating information for each Kulam (Kootam), its lineage, its migration history, etc in RootsToBuds Family Tree, will enable creation of a comprehensive record of Kongu Vellala Gounder community, which would help understand the history as well. This would also be the first for any community in the world!

Today, RootsToBuds have thousands of Kongu Vellalar Gounders connected to a single Family Tree. If you would like to help grow this tree, Register your interest and we will reply to you with further details.

        With regards

        1. Modavandi Gounders are basically Kongu Vellalars and their ancestors are physically challenged. Former Legislative Assembly Speaker Thiru.Kuzhandhai Velu is a Modavandi Gounders. Due to lack of awareness, Kongu Vellalars mistook them as different people. Now the Kongu Vellalars of the main land, viz., Coimbatore, Erode, have understood and realised them.

    1. @Surya

Kaarkathar vellalar from which region? Where is your kuladeivam located? There is an extensive and exclusive book for Kaarkathar printed in your community.

    2. Vellalars are found in Thondai Nadu, Kongu Nadu, Chozha Nadu, Pandiya Nadu, Nanjil Nadu. The Vellalars assume the title, Mudaliyar, Pillai and Gounder, depending on the place of inhabitation. Karkatha Vellalars are actually Saiva Vellalars and they assume the title “Pillai”. It is not known as to whether they have Kulam and Kootam like Kongu Vellalars.

  7. Friends I have one doubt. Naan kongu vellalar ponnar kulam but enaku oru alliance paathu Elam set airuchu avanga mayilar kulam, erode district. 1. There cannot be any discrimination among Kongu Vellalars. Kongu Vellalars are not a single stock. They are sub-divided into Vellala Gounders, Nattu Gounder, Narambukatti Gounder, Tirumudi Gounder, Thondu Vellalar, Pala Gounder, Poosari Gounder, Padaithalai Gounder, Chendalai Gounder, Pavalankatti Vellala Gounder, Pala Vellala Gounder, Sanku Vellala Gounder, Rathinagiri Gounder, Modavandi Gounder and Vellikkai Vellala Gounder. If this kind of discrimination and superiority complex is developed, then it will be harmful for the general welfare of the community. See the example of Pallees. They have integrated themselves and now they called themselves as Vannikula Shathriya.

        1. Hi Alaguvel sir. I read your response. But I would like to know the reason behind people discriminating amongst ourself. In more article I read thondu vellalar and modivandi will not belong to kongu vellalar as they were born outside community to [redacted] and [redacted] who were handicapped from our community respectively are separated from kongu vellalar. My question is who decided to separate them from our orgin and who gave them to separate them from our community [redacted]. So kongu kounders are merciless and did not even help their handicapped baby. We should not call ourself as philanthropist community. They ditched poor handicapped people just because they were born handicapped. Okay now, may be in the olden days that was a prestige issue for them to grow their handicapped child. But will any of us now throw the baby now in this generation just because they baby was born with challenge. I don’t think so… one group of community is without any identity still our jean some were or the other has to be recognised and to give them the privelege amongst our community. If not I am sure we are merciless and selfish people just for the sake of money and land ditched the poor handicapped…

          1. Good Evening Ramya Madam, After a long time, I logged into our website. I am an observer of our community and I have expressed my humble observations in this website here and there. You can peruse those observations. Formerly Legislative Assembly Speaker Thiru.Kuzhandaivel belongs to Modavandi Gounder. At the time of his election to Legislative Assembly, our Gounders from the Mainstream Kongu Vellala Gounders questioned the electorate and asked them sarcastically, “Modavandikka ungal vottu”. I think this kind of superiority stems from the economic affluence of the main stream Gounders and if this attitude is avoided, then it will be good for the overall community welfare. Tmt. K.B.Sundarambal belongs to Thirumudi Gounder. All achievers of our community do not belong to the mainstream. Some of them belong to Nattu Gounder/Modavandi Gounder/Tirumudi Gounder/Vellikkai Vellala Gounder. Vellala Gounders of the Main stream had migrated to places outside Kongu Region, i.e., North of Salem City, to be precise, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri Districts and Tirupattur Taluk of the erstwhile Composite Salem District, in search of agricultural lands about 300 years ago. This is for your kind information. Former DGP Thiru. B.P.Rangasamy, I.P.S., belongs to Nattu Gounder sub-group.

    1. Yes! there is a caste as Modavandi gounders. There are 71 kulams in Modamanda (Modavandi) gounder caste. Mayilam kulam may also be there. Once up on a time Mudamanda gounders were also Kongu velalars. But in course of time, it became a separate caste and considered to be inferior. Kulanthaivelu, a minister in MGR’s cabinet was from that caste. Now they are prospering and shining in various fields. Marriage with that caste may create problems in future when you find alliance

  8. Am kongu vellalar gounder…
Our kula deivam is ponkaali amman in vengabur..
My parents told me that ponkaali amman kovil belongs to both vettuva and vellalar gounders..
Any one know how is it possible?

    1. Vengaboor Thooran is having Akkarapatti Muthusamyas Kuladeivam in Vengamboor.

Vettuva Gounders were first Kaaniyalars in Vengaboor and in one festival for Ponkaliyamman temple the ghee exhausted and the Vettuvars bought ghee from Thoora Gotra Vellalas and Thoorans demanded 1/4 Kaani in Vengamboor and hence the Vettuvars gave the land and temple right and temple right and become Kaaniyalars of Vengamboor. They came from Akkarapatti village and so they brought Akkarapatti Muthusamy here.

    2. I am nagendran from Banglore. i want to know about my Kula Deivam, i am from( KAADAI KULAM)my father birth place Alambadi (kangayam), if any one know about this massage pls replay.

    Thanks

    1. Good evening. Glad to know that you belong to Punga Kaani Kootam. I think you hails from Dharmapuri or Krishnagiri District. Since the Vellala Gounders of Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Vaniyambadi Taluk migrated from Salem District before 300 years (Old Settlers), they could not find the deity of their Kootams. I am also searching answer for your question. Do anybody in the main land, viz., Coimbatore, Erode and Namakkal Districts, belong to Punga Kaani Kootam. They can enlighten us. Please Kongu Sonthagale, Nanbargale, Help!

  10. Hye..Im kaadai kulam…kula theivam saiva kaali..from membadi ,thiruchanggudu, selam…can I know what is my kootam??n is vellala kaunder and velalar same…n Im not sure I’m saiva velalar or non-vege velalar..pls ans as soon as possible.. Tq

  11. Hi I want to know about the difference between kongu vellalar and veerakudi vellalar( in dharmapuri one veerakudi vellalar guy said both are same ,in that area they called as veerakudi vellalar and they are kadai kootam kuladeivam kamatchi Amman kovil). Is it correct ? I don’t know about that area. But I search in web they are not mentioned as kongu vellalar.Anybody knows clearly please explain.

    1. The Vellala Gounders of Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Vaniyambadi Taluk have migrated from Salem District to this place (Poovania Nadu) about 300 years ago in search of lands. They have converted huge tracts of forests into cultivable lands. However, the elders due to their pre-occupation with the conversion of lands, have not enlightened their kith and kin about the exact place from which they have migrated to the present place. For the purpose of Backward Class status, they have obtained certificates as Veerakudi Vellalars, since Veerakudi Vellalars are BC and the Kongu Vellalars are Forward Class at the time of our Great Leader Mr.Subbarayan, CM of Madras Presidency. Prominent personalities from this region are Theerthagiri Gounder (MLA), Thogarapalli Krishnamurthy Gounder (MLA, Mittadhar, District Board Chairman, Composite Salem District, Chairman, LLA of Composite Salem District), Kallavi Doraisamy Gounder (MLA), C.K.Chinnaraju Gounder (MLA), Ambalur Karia Gounder (MLA), Alasandapuram Anumandaraya Gounder (MLA), Mullai Vadivel Gounder (MLA), C.Gnanasekaran (MLA), M.Thambidurai (Deputy Speaker, Lok Sabha), Mullai Vendhan (MLA), etc.

      1. Dear Alaguvel,
You have a lot of information about migration of konguvelalars to Poovaniya nadu. If you give full details on this it will be helpful. Many people from that region do not know their kulam and kuladeivam. I am trying to help them in some way. Can you give the details about them.

  13. Hi
Does vokkaliga kounder belong to thooran kootam of kongu vellala kounder (The history says so). can these kounder be married? The history says so. I am basically from Dindigal.can someone enlighten me on this. Thanks

    1. Vokkaliga or Okkaliya Gounder are not Kongu Vellalas. They are actually Okkaliya Gowda and their mother tongue is kannada. they have migrated to tamil nadu from Karnataka. By profession, they are our counterparts in the Karnataka State., like Reddies in the Andhra State.

      1. Yes, you are correct. In Karnataka they are the land lords. In honesty, generosity ,hospitality they are exactly like us. Vokkaligas migrated to Tamilnadu and predominantly live in Mettuppalayam, Karamadai areas.

    1. Kongu Vellala Gounders are not a single stock. Narambukatti Gounders are actually Vellala Gounders and they can be found in Gobi. About 500 years back, Vellala Gounders are classified into Padaithalai Gounder, Senthalai Gounder, Narambukatti Gounder, Vellikkai Gounder, etc. This can be understood from the Castes and Tribes of Southern India written by an Englishman Edgard Thurston.

  14. Hi All,
I belong to Sengannan (செங்க‌ண்ணன்) kulam. Could you please provide me the list of kootams in modavandi gounder…Because our family members are not able to find out which are all the kootams belongs to kongu vellalar gounder.
Anyone of you might be knowing these details.

  15. I am belong to kongu vellala gounder(muthur maniyan kulam). Eanaku alliance pathaga they belong to modavandi gounder (kanna kuttam). They are well settled family.ma parents said kk for that.they are saying that thuluva vellalar gounder is part of kongu Vellalar.in caste system they mentioned some gounder under kongu vellalar but this thuluva vellalar are not there and they are been listed separately. Whether they and US r same & I can say k for that guy r not ?????????? Am totally confused of this any one clear me the doubt

    1. Modavandi Gounders are basically Kongu Vellala Gounders. For the purpose of BC certificate only, they have obtained “Thuluva Vellala” Certificate. In the days of our Great Leader Dr.Subbarayan, CM of Madras Presidency, Kongu Vellalars felt ashamed to get BC status. At that time, some Vellala Gounders of Kongu Vellalars obtained Thuluva Vellala, Veerakudi Vellala and Agamudayar BC Certificates. That’s all. Afterward during the days of Kongu Singam Kovai Chezhian, Kongu Vellalars obtained BC status. Even in that, the Modavandi Gounders and Vellikai Gounders are inadvertantly omitted. This should be rectified.

  16. Am sudha, kongu vellalar gounder from krishnagiri. My kuladeivam is THALAGODAMMAN. But i dont know to which kulam i belongs to.?
    Can anyone help me.!

    Regards
    Sudha :)

  17. Hiii…I belongs to kongu vellalar sengannan kootam..and my lover is also a kongu vellalar and she says that she belongs to saathiliyan kootam and I have checked the kootam list that there is no kootam named like that.my doubt is whether the name of that saathiliyan kootam has been changed or what is the other name for that saathiliyan kootam.Anyone please tell me the detail…

  18. DEAR SIR I AM KONGU VELLALAR OF ” SENKANNAN” KOOTAM OF POLLACHI. N.MAHALINGAM ALSO OUR PERIAPPA, DOING POOJAS TO SRI AKILANDESHWARI AMMAN AS OUR KULADEIVAM. BUT

    1. If N.M. is your periyappa, he is your pangali. Naturally their kuladeivam will be yours also. But, near Pollachi there is a big village called Arthanaripalayam. Majority of the villagers are Sengannan kulam and worship Chellandiyamman and Sennimalai Andavar situated in the same village. That temple was built by bringing pidiman from its original temple some where from Olappalayam or near by. Please enquire your elders.

  19. We are separate kula theivam and separate kootam….den y somebody saying can table marry…..what are the procedure to marry porulthandha kootam and mulukadhan kootam….

    1. No im frm mulukadhan kottam and it is seperated from porulthantha kootam after our kula dheivam velaiammal(originally of sedan kottam but married a man in porulthantha kootam)who have successfully obtained her share of land from her brothers and we mulukkadhan kuttom members are her descents…so technically both mulukkadhan and porulthantha kottam are brothers and sisters so u cannot marry between these kootam’s.

    2. “Mulukkadhu porulanthai” is a branch of Porulanthai. So, inter marriage is not permitted. No procedure can undo the custom. Due to some ill treatment by her brothers regarding properties one “Vellaiyammal” became the kula dheivam of “Mulukkadhu porulanthai” kulam. In course of time they omitted the word “porulanthai” and called “Mulukkathan kulam”. This created confusion.

  20. Hi ,My name is Prabhu from Coimbatore, am graduated BBM CA in Kongu Nadu College (Year 2009-2012) & MBA Financial Management in Bharathiyar University (Year 2013-2015). i am searching job, please let us know anyone working Sakthi Groups of Company because i like to join Sakthi Groups of Company.

  21. Surname – Gounder or Kootam name ? clarified.
For all those confused over what to use in the surname part, here is the tip. The kootam names or kulam names are the clan or family names which are used at the surname part of an individual. My name is Palanivelu Palanisamy Thooran. I’m from Thooran kulam. It would be wrong to use Gounder as surname. Its wrong to write as Palanivelu Palanisamy Gounder as Gounder is a caste name and not family name or surname. Many of those living outside of Tamil Nadu might have atleast come across the forms demanding surnames like me. Hope this helps those confused between Gounder and Kootam name as Surname.

  22. Our system of Kulam or koottam is not much complicated. Very simple. In general, a boy from one kulam can marry a girl from any other kulam except few kulams like Kannan-kannanthai, porulanthai-mulukkathan etc. Some kulams split in to two.

  23. Hello Friends,

I am sathish kumar form krishnagiri district. I belongs to Puliyannan kulam and we are worshipping “PERUMAL” as our kula deivam.
But people says perumal can’t be a kulam deivam. So kindly tell me anyone knows about our kuladeivam temple.

And friends one request, some vellalar gounders in erode, coimbatore district are not accepting the vellalar gounders from salem, dharmapuri and krishnagiri
district. Since many of us from our side are not following the same rituals compare to erode, coimbatore district they are thinking like this.Vellala Gounders from Salem and Namakkal Districts have migrated to Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri Districts in search of lands for the purpose of cultivation. During this time our elders may have forgotten to follow our all rituals.

Due to this now many of the peoples are not accepting us as a vellalar gounder. Its hurting us a lot.

because of this our community becomes a minority compare to other communities. We should stay strong together to show our strength

Kindly educate the people in the erode, coimbatore district regarding this.

And if anyone knows any details about this kindly share to everyone.
